Botanical Rugs

Description

La Manufacture Cogolin introduces Botanical Rugs, a new series of hand-made rugs, hand-knotted in Silk, Wool and Linen, created in collaboration with Tim Simpson and Sarah van Gaeren, cofounders of London-based design agency Glithero, whose innate curiosity and attention to detail yields products that combine precision with inventiveness, and serendipity with design.

Botanical Rugs are hand-knotted rugs, depicting flora that have been foraged and pressed before being composed into intricate designs. The specimen come from the designers’ own herbarium, a library of pressed botanicals that have been collected over several years.

The botanical pattern are influenced Millefleur tapestries of the early Renaissance. The gradient in the rugs’ background colorreference photographic techniques, in particular the botanical photographs of the 19th Century botanist and photographer Anna Atkins. They emphasize the essential relationship between plant specimen and light.

The color-ways are chosen to transport us to a distinct yet subtle moment of color in nature; a field of golden corn, a pavement scattered with rose petals, a bouncy patch of moss. The blue rug bears reference to Glithero’s classic blue cyanotype collection that is printed by light with early photographic blueprinting techniques.
