Summer of ’25

HUNGRY GHOST FESTIVAL – Sure, lots of cities have a Chinatown—but San Francisco’s is the biggest and boldest in North America. On August 23rd, don’t miss the Hungry Ghost Festival (aka Zhongyuan or Yulan Festival). Sound spooky? It kind of is! Legend says it’s the one day when the spirit world and ours collide, and the hungriest ghosts come looking for comfort. Locals respond with food, music, and offerings to keep the peace—and maybe ease a little of our own inner chaos too. It’s unique, wonderful, and totally worth experiencing.

TASTE OF BAYVIEW – Our city may be small, but some neighborhoods still get overlooked – like Bayview. Locals say it’s a hidden gem, and Taste of Bayview on August 29th is the perfect excuse to check it out. This family-friendly event features live music and a curated lineup of neighborhood eateries serving up their signature dishes—plus a chance to meet the chefs and hear the stories behind the flavors.

CACHÉ – Who doesn’t love French food? (Trick question—the answer is no one.) A new French bistro just opened in the Inner Sunset, and I can’t wait to try it. The co-owners met while working at the legendary Pierre Gagnaire in Bordeaux, and brought their dream of a modern San Francisco bistro to life right here in the Inner Sunset. Think seasonal ingredients, local flavors, and a killer lineup of natural wines. Très chic.

MONTY’S DOG BEACH AND BAR – Located on the sand in Long Beach, Monty’s has all your bases covered. From an agility area, to off-leash play on the beach, and a menu that will satisfy you both. Parking is a breeze in the public lot just adjacent and check their event calendar for weekend DJs and movie nights.

SOUTHERN GUILD – Our love for this Melrose Hill gallery is beyond obsession and a testament to their curation. Every exhibit tells a story that expands our perspective and the latest from Zanele Muholi builds on this. Running through August, Muholi presents 100 portraits capturing the lives of Black, lesbian, bisexual and Queer women, along with Trans and gender non-conforming people.

BAR ETOILE – An impressive wine that will not leave anyone wanting is only the start. What also stands out from this Parisian Bistro transplant to Melrose Hill is the food. From elevated classics of Steak Frites and Poulet Rôti to your soon to be new favorite dishes including Chicken Liver Mousse and Ricotta Dumplings. Start your evening at Southern Guild and end it on a high at Bar Etoile!
